Sunset 04:31
Stuck in the middle of a sentence I want to want another step to right to left, no, I can see no way around it. The dark is sneaking up, a flame of cloud above us. Blue to red to pink. Can you believe this is our place in space, love? Surrounded by no light, I’ve fallen to dark confusion. I can’t feel your hand, no, feet, no, I can’t see your face, where are you? I guess I’ll meet you on the other side. There is no way around it — we’re falling deep down inside it. We pull apart across the deep divide. There is no way around it — world keeps turning round and round it. I’ll just float here and we’ll take the ride. There is no way around it, darkness falls and we’re inside it. I’m gonna see you on the other side. There is no way around it — we’re falling deep down inside it.

Destruction 04:29
You fooled me for the last time. Fooled once can’t fool again. I’m sucking on black diamonds. Choked once can’t choke again. So pleased with what you have, your house of painted glass. In a world gone mad, is the blue sky black? Destroy the truth again. Virtue’s the greater sin. Yes, the blue sky’s black — just turn the lights out. Biting down on your cash cow. Burn it up then do it again. Suck it out of the ground, now. You know everything comes around, everything comes around, everything...

Perfection 03:09
Start me up, just turn the key. I am not me, I made my life for you. High on electricity, that’s all I need to make my body move. Stuck inside this factory, moving like machinery, I can be the thing you need. I can do what you could never do. Show me what you want to see, I’ll be a fine facsimile of you. Mark my place and paint my face. Am I pretty? I dance this way for you. Made inside your factory, caught up in machinery. I can fill the gap you leave. When you’re gone I’ll be a better you. Your projection. Your invention. Your creation. Your perfection. In your mind I came alive. In your mind I am alive.

Gath’ring clouds in our spacious skies. Amber waves blocked out from God’s holy light. Purple mountains are rising up tonight. Heroes proved in liberating strife. More than self country loved, mercy more than life. We’re the earthquake, we’re the fist, we’re the knife. America! America! America! May God thy gold refine. If you’re lost in the dark with no light, you will love 45. Day is dawning, the bells about to chime. America! America! America! May God thy gold refine. America! America! America! Every gain devine. America! You’re panning for gold. America! You’re selling your soul. America! Your forefathers lied. America! You cultivate 45.

Tomb 07:03
There’s no word for what is wrong. Like a long forgotten song makes a wave around the room, won’t remember when I’m gone. Down the road we can’t turn back, beating body, heart attack. Like air in my balloon, it’s the stillness of the tomb. Into black again. It’s my only friend. Got a repetitious soul. Patterns weighing down these clothes. Let them fall into the soil, giving over all control. Is it poison or perfume? Is it casket or cocoon? Can you see my flowers bloom in the darkness of the tomb? Into black again. It’s my only friend. Let me be consumed — it’s better for you. Forget I ever sang. Forget I had a name. The sun will rise again. You’ll make better friends. No one will know me then — that’s nature’s revenge. Anchor or balloon? Poison or perfume? Casket or cocoon? The darkness of the tomb.

Dismantle 04:05
Working up our confidence. Thinking of the ones who came before. Look at us so innocent. Never saw us breaking down the door. Shaking up what’s under us. Breaking up the crowd that came before. Make a noise so thunderous. Find a way to open up the door.
7.
Fragility 03:01
You and me, we’ve got a lot of things to worry about. Messed it up again, I’m rushing around like a clown. Give it some time — maybe some time will help us figure it out. Good ideas come in like a flood, and I’m in a drought. Caught up in my head I’ve got nothing but clouds of doubts. Give me a sign — give me a sign to help me figure it out. You can spin around, around again, ‘til you can’t tell which way is up. That don’t mean that the world’s no longer green — or is it blue? Which one’s true? You can’t find the bottom of the rock by standing on top. You can’t taste the entire sea by drinking one drop. Give it some time — maybe some time will help us figure it out.

Womb 02:40
In this sea, so ugly, a new me, floating and waiting. I’m growing a body. I’m budding, waiting for spring. If you stick with me it will be alright. If you push and breathe, we can beat the night. Don’t leave, my baby, I’m in deep, all of my body. We’re growing. We’re forming. Just hold me, I know we’re ready. If you stick with me it will be alright. If you push and breathe, we can beat the night. Just stay with me, wait for the morning light. We will push and breathe to the other side.

Labor 04:04
If you can’t breathe, if you can’t breathe. Riot police, riot police. Walking the streets, walking the streets. Riot police, riot police. Bearing your teeth. Banging the beats. Bark at the beast. Who is your chief? Volume increased. Buzzes and beeps. If you can’t stand up on two feet. Riot police, riot police. If you can’t feel your own heartbeat. Riot police, riot police. Bearing your teeth. Banging the beats. Bark at the beast. Who is your chief? Volume increased. Buzzes and beeps. If you won’t fight, if you want peace, down on your knees. I can’t believe this is a dream. Bark at the beast.

Self 06:12
You can’t be their silver girl standing on top their prize. You can’t live in their story world where everything’s washed out white. You can’t say their simple words with nothing inside your head. You can’t be their perfect pearl — you’re pink, yellow, and red. Blue, bluer than the sky, warmer than summer. Colder than the rain, louder than thunder. Higher than the clouds, strong as a mother. They can’t bottle up all of your color. They can’t hold you by the wrist — you’re dancing in the light. They can’t break you into bits — you’re bouncing through their eyes. They can’t save your wicked soul — you’re haunting all their dreams. They can’t get you out of their mind — you’re orange, purple, and green.

Together 01:59
Promise me you’ll stay right by my side. Hold my hand we’ll be each other’s guide. Looking back from this view, it’s so true. It’s you over me over you. Pull me up, just hold me with both arms. Where you go I’ll be right where you are. Looking back from this view, it’s so true. It’s you over me over you. If you would rather be alone, it’s okay — I can let you go. But we’re better when we’re together, don’t you know? Let me hitch my wagon to your cart. Hand in hand we’ll be each other’s star. Looking back from this view, it’s so true. You over me over you. Back from this view, it’s the truth. It’s you over me over you.

Dawn 04:17
Will you call my name? Make the seasons change? When you warm the world, will I do the same? Will I spend the day hiding in the shade? Who will wake me up? Who will light the way? Here comes the heat, my love, my baby. You are the heat, my love, my lady. Can you see the glow on horizon low? Not so far away— will it overflow? What can wash the grey? What will speed the day? If I chant your name, will the season change?

about

NIGHT was developed as a collaboration between Municipal Ballet Co. and Color Animal. The ballet was performed on June 8 & 9, 2018, at Commonwealth Studios in South Salt Lake. Choreography by Jo Blake, Hannah Bowcutt, Sara Borazan, Sarah Longoria, Nora Price, and Chase Wise. Performed by Hannah Bowcutt, Amy Falls, Mary Jessie Floor, Sarah Lund, Ursula Perry, Nora Price, Stacie Riskin, Tristana Yegge, and Joni Wilson. Juggling by David Ayala and Tim Dwyer. Film by Ben Estabrook. Special thanks to Hillary Musgrove-Kirkland, Chad Kirkland, Cody Kirkland, Commonwealth Studios, and Fisher Beer.

NIGHT was inspired by La Ballet de la Nuit — a ballet created in 1653, in the court of Louis XIV, which lasted through the night, from sunset until dawn — and by Valarie Kaur’s Watch Night Service speech, which includes the concept, “What if this darkness is not the darkness of the tomb, but the darkness of the womb?” With these foundations, Sarah Longoria and Andrew Shaw produced the NIGHT ballet as an examination of the darknesses in our current cultures and our hope that, when light drives out this darkness, it will bear a worldwide culture founded in dignity for all individuals, supportive communities, and revolutionary love.
